Born in 1945, Akin Ongor completed his secondary education in TED Ankara College and then graduated from METU- Faculty of Administrative Sciences in 1967.

In his career, he worked as a marketing manager for 13 years in various industrial firms. He joined the banking sector as the senior manager in Pamukbank in 1981. In 1987, he was nominated as the Vice General Manager in charge of Marketing and Foreign Affairs in the Departmen of Corporate and Commercial Banking in Garanti Bank. Between 1991-2000, he continued working as the Managing Director and CEO of Garanti Bank. He led to Garanti’s major transformation.

Develop A Different Personality Out of Business

Until 2003, he served as the Managing Member of Administrative Board of Garanti Bank and as the Board of Directors of Garanti Bank International, Garanti Moscow, Garanti Insurance and Garanti Technology. During this period, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Turkish American Business Council and the Board Membership of Istanbul Culture and Art Foundation.

He received METU recognition award in 1994 and a “METU Outstanding Service Award” for his contributions to the country and the university in 1999. He received many times “the most successful manager” award by leading economics journals and newspapers. In 2009, he was awarded “the Man of Foundation” by the Prime Ministry General Directorate of Foundations.

At present he is the head of CEO Club. He is a member of Board of Trustees of WWF-Turkey, Boğaziçi University Foundation and TED Istanbul College Foundation.

After leaving professional business life, he started producing chateau style Selendi brand vintage wine in the vineyard he built in Akhisar. He also published a book named “ia orana” in which he reminisces about his memories in the Pacific Ocean and a book named “Benden Sonra Devam” in which he wrote out his fabulous success story he lead when he was in the General Directorate of Garanti Bank.
